The French Space Agency CNES has ordered four 300 kg Earth observation satellites from Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS) under its CO3D programme, which will be launched in 2022. The terrain mapping satellites will be financed by both CNES and Airbus DS with the former investing €100 million (US$114 million). From their sun synchronous low Earth orbit, each of the satellites will be equipped with stereo imaging equipment able to achieve resolutions of 0.5 m.
CNES will be the initial customer for specific terrain elevation imagery with Airbus then able to offer the imagery commercially to both CNES and other clients.
