China launched a Long March 2D (CZ-2D) rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on 14 October. The mission which lifted-off at 1912 GMT carried three satellites to LEO. The mission reportedly launched the second Yaogan 36 triplet of satellites. These spacecraft if they have the same characteristics as the first triplet, will consist of two optical units joined by one equipped with radar. Chinese media describe the mission of these satellites as “remote sensing” however, Western observers believe that they in fact have a military reconnaissance/signals intelligence purpose.
