At 1542 GMT on 29 May 2019 the hatch of the Pirs module was opened for the start of a six hour one minute long spacewalk involving two Russian cosmonauts. With five spacewalks under his belt, Oleg Kononenko was well placed to show his fellow cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin the ropes on his first extra vehicular activity (EVA).
While their work schedule included installing new handrails and removing samples from space exposure payloads, the spacewalking pair had time to pass their birthday wishes to Alexei Leonov, the first ever spacewalker on Voskhod 2 in March 1965, and who became 85 on the following day.
