Japan launched the 1,200kg IGS Radar Spare satellite as part of its Information Gathering System at 0121 GMT on 1 February 2015 using an H2A 202 (HIIA-202) launch vehicle flown from the Tanegashima launch site in Japan. The spacecraft was built by Mitsubishi Electric Corp (MELCO). The series of IGS radar and optical satellites are defence related and are operated by Japan’s Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center. The spacecraft was launched into a near-polar Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit.
