Human spaceflight activity during May 2024

On the ISS, NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin boarded Crew Dragon – NASA Crew 8 (Endeavour) on 2 May. They undocked from the forward-facing port of the station’s Harmony module (IDA-2) on the ISS at 1257 GMT. This was to free up the port for the arrival of the uncrewed SpaceX Dragon (expected in August) carrying cargo to the station. The craft then autonomously redocked with the Harmony module’s space-facing port (IDA-3) at 1346 GMT. This safely completed the 28th spacecraft relocation in the space station’s history.

The uncrewed robotic/remotely controlled cargo craft, Progress MS-25, undocked from the ISS Poisk module on 28 May at 0839 GMT, taking the trash with it. After firing its braking thrusters at approximately 1148 GMT, Progress MS-25 mostly burnt up upon re-entry, while any of its incombustible fragments were expected to splash down in the non-navigable area of the southern Pacific Ocean at around 1229 GMT.

The above move was to make way for Progress MS-27, which was launched at 0942 GMT on 30 May. Two days later the Progress MS-27 cargo ship docked with the ISS Poisk module, at 1142 GMT on 1 June, delivering 2,504 kg of supplies.

On the Chinese Space Station Tiangong, at 0230 GMT on 28 May, Taikonauts Ye Guangfu and Li Guangsu left the Wentian module to begin their spacewalk. During their extravehicular activity in their red and blue Feitian spacesuits, they installed debris protection material on the station’s exterior. Their near 8.5-hour spacewalk concluded at 1058 GMT.
