At 1915 GMT on 9 April 2014, a Shavit 2 launch vehicle lifted off from the Palmachim Air Force base in Israel carrying the Ofeq 10 radar reconnaissance spacecraft. The launch was made into the less efficient westward direction – going against the benefit of the Earth’s spin – due to political considerations. The 295kg spacecraft, which was manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) MTB Space Division, is believed to be the second spacecraft employing the TECSAR bus, which had been previously used by the Polaris/Ofeq 8 spacecraft which was launched by an Indian PSLV rocket in 2008. The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is reported to have been built by IAI Elta Systems division and has a reported resolution of 0.5m.
