The construction orders for Koreasat 5a and Koreasat 7 have been awarded to Thales Alenia Space after the European spacecraft constructor beat off competition from Orbital Sciences Corp. The announcement of the orders by KT Sat, the satellite services division of the Korean firm KT Corp (Korea Telecom Corp) was made on 12 May 2014. Both 3,500kg satellites are expected to be launched to geostationary Earth orbit in 2017. Both will use the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000B2 bus/platform and will last a minimum of 15 years.
