The maiden flight of the Long March-11 solid rocket-based quick-response launch vehicle took place from the Jiuquan launch site in Inner Mongolia at 0121 GMT on 25 September 2015. Aboard the rocket was a mysterious satellite called Pujiang-1, built by the Shanghai Academy of Space Technology. This is thought to be a mass dummy to test out the vehicle’s payload performance. There were also three cubesat-class spacecraft aboard taking part in a mission called Tainwang-1 to demonstrate formation flying and intersatellite communications. The three satellites will also monitor sea ice and maritime traffic using ADS-B signals.
