On 16 September Northrop Grumman received a contract from the US Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) to develop a next-generation “jam-resistant” military communications satellite. The contract was awarded through the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications programme – also known as Evolved Strategic Satcom. It is reportedly worth US$298 million.
This contract may lead to a new series of satellites capable of replacing the recently launched AEHF (Advanced Extremely High Frequency) military comms fleet. Under the terms of the contract that satellite should be completed by May 2025.
