US space tracking authorities have confirmed the breakup of satellite messaging constellation operator Orccomm’s first generation (OG1) satellite launched in 1998, Orccomm 16 (FM 16), Catalogue Number 25417. The time of breakup was at approximately 0712 GMT on 22 Dec 2018. Some 34 associated pieces of debris were tracked after the event. There is no indication that this breakup was caused by a collision with another object.
