The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Sentinel 1A radar satellite was successfully launched into a Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit on board a Soyuz ST-A/Fregat M launch vehicle from its Sinnamary launch site near Kourou, French Guiana at 2102 GMT on 3 April 2014. The C-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system carried by the Thales Alenia Space-built spacecraft is designed to provide all weather images to allow sea ice and oil slicks to be tracked as part of the Copernicus Earth observation programme. The spacecraft is designed to have an operational life of at least seven years but is expected to last 12 years.
