The United States Space Force (USSF) on 9 November 2022 confirmed that it had ordered a second Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M) from manufacturer Ball Aerospace. This contract modification is worth US$78.2 million. This satellite has a projected launch date in 2028.
In 2017 Ball was selected to build the first WSF-M unit, the first part of a campaign to replace the functionalities of the old DMSP weather satellites. Alongside this contract to build the initial WSF-M unit, set to launch in 2024, there was the now activated option for a second spacecraft.
